Et si Nnom Ngui de Ténor c’est de la variété?

L’artiste camerounais Ténor a annoncé depuis plusieurs mois la sortie de sa première EP, surnommé Nnom Ngui. Nous avons eu la possibilité d’écouter les sons. Notre verdict est définitif, tout porte à croire que “le Fiang le Way le Yamoh” s’est désormais éloigné du rap.

Fort de 7 titres, jonché de contradictions et d’interrogations, nous avons essayé de décrypter pour vous cette œuvre, copyright d’Universal Music Africa. L’EP est disponible sur toutes les plateformes de téléchargements légales.

COVER

Comme nous le savons déjà depuis quelques temps, Ténor a réuni autour de lui, une équipe de jeunes. Parmi ceux ci, le dénommé Mike Miller l’infographe du crew. Le cover est assez simple, mais exhaustif.

En Afrique équatoriale, nous connaissons la signification du gorille, le vrai roi de la forêt verdoyante, qui trône dans les arbres au dessus de la faune.

Tenor Nnom Ngui

Écrite en lettres majuscules, Nnom Ngui (vieux gorille en béti, ndlr) en lettres d’or, le titre de l’EP s’impose sur la pochette tout rayonnant tel le métal précieux. Est ce un clin d’œil à ses Haters? Grâce à sa signature chez Universal (dont le logo est implacablement placé au bas du cover), il paraît qu’il roule désormais sur l’or.
À propos Trône, le dit Gorille, porte une couronne. Message subliminal sûrement, Ténor se déclare ainsi Roi de la forêt, est ce le “Roi” du Game?

FLOW & MOOD & LYRIQUES

Niveau Flow, bah, on connaît sa couleur, son intonation et le timbre immanquable de sa voix. Certes il a essayé, dans certains “Back Voices”, de jouer avec l’instrument vocal, mais en définitive aucune surprise à ce niveau. Par contre la présence extrême des autotunes est à noter. Au lieu de forcer la chansonnette, peut être inviter un véritable chanteur dans certains chœurs aurait fait l’affaire.

A la première écoute, j’étais désappointé, la dialectique de cet EP m’a un peu surpris. En effet c’était comme un capharnaüm pour mon ouïe, de BOBO à VENTRE en passant par MARIAGE. La direction et le concept de cet EP est impénétrable pour moi, j’ai pas pu cerner et, je suis à la sixième écoute. Mais allons y pas à pas, il y a néanmoins de belles surprises.

Afrobeat

La liste des featurings étant minime, je commencerais par APPELER. Je dois avouer que le son m’a moyennement plu. Le rythme est endiablé, de l’afrobeat comme on aime, on y retrouve bien en forme, mais ses copains du KIFF NO BEAT étaient passablement présents… un exemple de punchlines, pas vraiment au niveau d’un des gars du KNB?

J’ai mis deux minutes pour me remettre de mes émotions. C’est pas la champions league ça.

Si on reste dans l’ambiance afrobeat, on peut retenir le titre BALANCE. Très jouissif, ça m’a fait rire aux éclats, avec un refrain dans le style du concept américain: “The Cupid Shuffle” (regarde sur Google, ndlr).

Trap

Fidèle à la tradition africaine, il a glissé BOBO, un cocktail de clash et d’atalaku. Entre citations de noms de multimilliardaires africains, j’ai eu l’impression que Ténor tire à balles ouvertes sur certains… “c’est le mérite qui doit te mériter, quand tu arrives même la pluie go s’abriter” … Stanley? Maahlox? son ancien producteur?

Quant à MONSIEUR MIGNON, pas obligatoirement mon kiffe. Un égo-trip un peu trop ostentatoire, pourtant jonché de quelques beaux passages:

Moi ma beauté n’a pas de prix,
j’en ai marre,
le matin je suis toujours beau,
alors que pour être laid chaque nuit je prie.

MARIAGE? no way. C’est bien beau de vouloir faire du reggae, je veux dire c’est même très courageux… mais le reggae à ses codes. Quand j’écoute ce son et j’y oppose par exemple “Trop peu de temps” de Nuttea, qui flotte dans le même ether, je me dis… purée autant de beaux textes qui s’envolent dans le néant.

Loin de moi l’idée de comparer Nuttea à Tenor, ce jeune homme à encore du chemin et il s’améliorera… du moins je l’espère.

LVMH est l’hypotypose du mumble rap camerounais dans toute sa splendeur. Un anglais approximatif, parfois inaudible, des petites punchs marrantes ça et la, pour moi ce fût un festin chaud et froid. J’ai beaucoup aimé la simplicité et la puissance millimétré de l’instrumental.

Variété

Finalement je trouve que le style arboré dans le VENTRE lui sied à merveille. Fort de son origine, je dirais que c’est sanguinaire, voir ancré dans ses gênes… Le Bitkusi. Le flow rapide, la punchline à l’aise, on le sent en plein dans son délire, c’est indéniable. Comment résister à autant de bonne humeur. Ça c’est le son de tout les coins chauds de Yaoundé pour les prochains mois… Qui pari?

Ici encore la production musicale sauve un petit peu les meubles. Dans son ensemble, VENTRE à apporter son lot d’incompréhension quant à la direction artistique de cet EP.

INSTRUMENTALS

Le remix d‘EVENEMENT (richard band de zoetele) est l’un des meilleurs titres de l’EP pour moi. Le folklore et la culture camerounaise y sont représentés à 100%. Ramzy, qui a signé 5 prods sur les 7 à fait preuve d’une ingéniosité assez surprenante. Mr Behi et Tamsir quant à eux complètent la liste des producteurs. Le mix et le mastering sont assurés par Ekie Bozeur.

Nnom Ngui Ténor

L’étoffe de la production est d’une assez bonne qualité. Dans l’ensemble les productions sont l’un des points positifs de cet EP.

RESUMÉ

Ténor a certes pu prouver une certaine évolution, mais rien de surprenant ou d’inattendu à part bien sûr le remix d’événement. Il n’a pas démérité dans son ensemble, son style de “Comedy Rap” à pris le dessus sur l’ensemble des productions rap. Sur l’afrobeat il est constant et de temps à autre monotone… le feat avec les KNB? à oublier…

Pour moi le talent de Ténor réside dans sa bonne maîtrise de la variété africaine, le bitkusi-rap. Il y excelle, c’est son tatami…

Une question pour la route, pourquoi autant de labels à la production de cet album? EBE, EEP, Anofel Wear, 9.3.7 Musik Starz …
